Fixing your smile

Fix your smile – replacement options for missing teeth

What can dentists do if I lose a tooth?

Fixing your smile

Whether it is due to an accident, disease or decay, losing a tooth can be very inconvenient and upsetting.

If you lose a tooth, there are a number of options available to you, which you can discuss with your dentist to get your smile gleaming again.

If left unresolved, even one missing tooth can have an impact on the rest of your mouth’s structure.

The remaining teeth will be more likely to move towards the empty space where the tooth used to be, and this can weaken the structure of your teeth, destabilise them and it will impact your bite too.

3 Solutions to missing teeth:

1. Single dental implants:

If you have lost a single tooth, then dental implants are an easy solution.

A dental implant will replace the natural root and tooth with a crown, which looks and feels like a real tooth.

Benefits of dental implants:

  • Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, which means it is a healthy solution and will keep the root bone healthy and intact.
  • The teeth on either side do not have to be treated or affected.
  • They are a strong and durable long-term answer to missing teeth.
  • A dental implant requires minimal maintenance.

They are therefore an economic and easy option, which is in itself another reason to smile. Learn more here.

2. Dentures:

Dentures - a solution to missing teeth

Dentures are removable false teeth that fit perfectly over the gums to replace missing teeth, and to protect the gums from damage or problems.

Complete or full dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, whereas partial dentures are worn when some natural teeth remain within the mouth.

Full dentures:

These are used when all the teeth are missing. There are two types of full denture.

Conventional denture:

A conventional denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has started to heal.

They are usually ready to be put in the mouth around 8-12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.

Immediate denture:

This type of denture is made in advance and can be inserted as soon as the teeth have been removed.

The wearer, therefore, doesn’t have to be toothless during the healing period. Though convenient, these dentures are considered a temporary solution, until the conventional dentures can be worn.

Partial dentures:

Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum coloured plastic frame and held in place by a metal framework.

This provides a perfect solution to missing teeth, filling the necessary spaces in between remaining natural teeth.

A precision partial denture is removable, and rather than clasps, it has internal attachments which help connect the frame to adjacent crowns.

This is a much more natural-looking denture, so you can smile with confidence.

3. Dental bridges:

A dental bridge is a denture which is ‘bridges the gap.’ It consists of a denture, which is held in place by the teeth on either side of the gap.

Bridges, like implants, are typically made from porcelain which makes them blend aesthetically with the rest of your teeth.

There are four options for dental bridges:

  • Traditional – a false tooth held in place by dental crowns that have been cemented onto the teeth on either side of the gap.
  • Cantilevera denture held in place by a dental crown, and attached to only one abutment tooth.
  • Marylanda Maryland bridge uses the natural teeth on either side of the gap to hold the denture in place.
  • Implant-supportedthis kind of bridge uses dental implants rather than crowns or natural teeth in order to hold the bridge in position.
